high incidence in the case of diphtheria is probably due to the fact
that the nursing of patients suffering from this disease has to be
carried out in a temporary wood and iron building under circumstances
which render it difficult to maintain hygiene and satisfactory
ventilation in the wards.
Training and State Examination.
During the year 1926, lectures and instruction in practical
nursing and hygiene have been carried out in accordance with the
syllabus of the General Nursing Council, and courses of lectures
upon Infectious Diseases, Anatomy, Physiology, Hygiene, and
Practical Nursing have been delivered.
Four Nurses were successful at the Preliminary State
Examination, and two Nurses passed the Final State Examination,
which enables them to be placed upon the Register of the General
Nursing Council.
Conclusion.
The result of the year's work at the Hospital, taking all the
circumstances into consideration, is very satisfactory, and although
the total mortality rate has increased (3.0 in 1925, 3.8 in 1926),
the severity of the diseases, especially in the case of diphtheria,
has been much greater than last year.
The need for improved accommodation for the patients suffering
from diphtheria and for the members of the nursing and
domestic staff, together with the necessity for the provision of an
admission and discharge block has been pointed out on many occasions,
and is a matter which requires the early and earnest
consideration of the Local Authority.
It is my privilege again to place on record my appreciation
and thanks to the Matron for the very efficient manner in which she
has performed her duties: duties which have been rendered so
much more difficult owing to the fact that they have been carried
out under conditions which are far from ideal. It is mainly the
result of her untiring effort, zeal and enthusiasm, that so much
has been done to ensure a successful year's work.
