Collection of House Refuse.
21,289 tons of house refuse have been collected as compared
with 21,920 tons during the previous year, showing a decrease of
146 tons. In view of the fact that there were a large number of
new houses constructed during the year, there should have been
an increase of tonnage collected—the decrease is owing to the
several months' coal stoppage and the consequent increased use
of oil and gas stoves.
There are 29,030 houses in the Borough from which house
refuse is collected weekly, and the average weight of refuse per
house per annum equals 14.6 cwts.—a decrease of over ¼ cwt. compared
with the previous year. The average weight of refuse per
head of population equals 2.9 cwts. and costs 1s. 2d. per annum
to collect. The total cost of collection was £8,657, which works
out at 8s. 1d. per ton, or under 6s. per house yearly, and under
1½d. per house weekly.
