8,842 nuisances, generally the outcome of sanitary defects,
were dealt with by the Inspectors. (These are fully detailed on
inset opposite page 135.) Of these nuisances, 4,958 were detected
in routine work, and 3,884 by house-to-house inspections. To
secure their abatement, the undermentioned Notices were
served :—
Preliminary 2,909
Statutory 520
Dust Bin 356
Water 1
3,786
Complaints.
2,462 complaints were received—960 written and 1,502 verbal
—the figures for the previous year being 1,059 written and 1,353
verbal.
The complaints were of a varied nature, as many people
have a wrong conception of an Inspector's powers—some of them
referred to matters over which we have no jurisdiction. Others
were anonymous, but received the same attention—we find from
experience that there are sometimes good reasons for hidden
identity.
