7. FOLLOWING UP.
The arrangements for following up defects found at medical
inspection were set out fully in the report for 1920, and these
have been continued throughout. The School Nurses have paid
3,840 visits to the homes of children in whom defects were found
at routine medical inspection. Of the 1,286 children referred for
treatment 953, or 74.1 per cent., have obtained treatment. The
corresponding percentage for the year 1924 was 76.33. The
School Nurses have also paid 121 special visits to the Schools,
and 22 visits to the Feeding Centres and have undertaken 32
journeys in connection with the admission and discharge of
children to Institutions. In addition all children, referred for
the operative treatment of tonsils and adenoids (319), have been
visited by the School Nurses both prior to and after the operation.
The work of following up forms a very important part of the many
duties of the School Nurses, and the results obtained have been
highly satisfactory seeing that the staff falls so far short of the
estimated number for the school population (i.e., one School
Nurse for every 2,000 children).
