(h) Ear Disease and Hearing.
1.3 per cent, of the children examined were found to be
suffering from otitis media, as compared with 1.57 per cent, in
1924. The percentage of deaf children was 0.7, the corresponding
number for last year being 1.09.
(0 Dental Defects.
The percentage of children exhibiting gross dental defect
remains extremely high, and the fact that dental caries and oral
sepsis play such a prominent part in the causation of other
physical defects has prompted me on many occasions to advise
and urge the Local Authority to adopt a more comprehensive
scheme in connection with the School Dental Section. (See also
report of Dental Surgeon on pp. 1100-103 and 8 (h), p. 81.)
(j) Crippling Defects.
Reference to Table III on p. 109 will furnish information
with regard to the occurrence of crippling defects in the area. 54
cases of crippling due to tuberculosis and 127 cases due to other
causes were discovered at routine medical inspection during the
year.
8. INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
A detailed account of the scheme adopted for the detection
and prevention of infectious diseases was submitted in my reports
for 1920 and 1923, and the accompanying table will furnish
statistics in regard to the incidence of the acute infectious diseases
during the year 1925.
