County Borough of East Ham Education Committee.
TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE
EDUCATION COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,—
I have the honour to present my Annual Report upon the work
of the School Medical Service of the County Borough of East Ham
for the year ended 31st December, 1925.
The number of routine and special cases examined of elementary
school children totalled 13,201, as compared with 9,467 in
1924, and a complete medical inspection of all children in the
Secondary School has also been carried out. These inspections
have revealed the fact that the general physical condition of the
scholars exhibits a very apparent improvement (see Table, under
5, p. 71). This is the result of the marked progress and development,
not only in connection with the School Medical Service, but
also in the direction of general preventive medicine and hygiene,
which have been so evident in recent years. The keen interest of
the members of the Local Authority in all matters relating to the
maintenance of health, and an increase in physical fitness has been
largely responsible for the achievement of such encouraging results.
I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my appreciation
of the work carried out by the local branch of the Invalid
Children's Aid Association, whereby, apart from the 31 children
who have been sent to Schools of Recovery by arrangement with
the Local Authority, 97 children have received open-air and convalescent
treatment.
I also wish to express my thanks to the teachers for their great
help and courtesy, the whole of my staff for the excellent work
carried out, and to Mr. Thompson and his staff for their co-operation.
