schedule of dilapidations was forwarded to the owner and if the
work of remedying defects constituting nuisances was not
executed, a Notice was served under the Public Health Acts.
Smoke Abatement.
Observations were made of offending shafts with reference
to the emission of black smoke. Notices were served and in one
instance the nuisance was abated by means of a mechanical invention.
No local records of atmospheric impurity are taken.
Offensive Trades.
The Borough is exceptionally free from offensive trades, there
being only one small gut scraping business in Langdon Crescent.
The business is well-conducted and no complaints have been made
nor has there been any need to serve Notice in respect of
nuisance.
The collection of fish, offal and butchers' bones is carried
out by private contractors, as far as possible during the night or
early morning. Complaints were made in the summer months of
offensive odours from the collecting vans. The principal offenders
were butchers' bone and fat collectors, who have always
used open vans unsuited for this work.
The nuisance could be considerably mitigated if more modern
methods were applied.
Disinfection.
1,241 premises were disinfected, 740 for infectious diseases,
474 for tuberculosis, 3 for scabies, 24 for vermin. The steam
disinfector at the Isolation Hospital is used for bedding and other
articles requiring disinfection.
Infections Diseases.
In all cases of infectious disease notified, the premises are
at once visited by the District Inspector. The sanitary arrangements
of the house with its surrounding conditions are examined,
and where any sanitary defects are discovered or stripping and
cleansing required, Notices are served upon the persons responsible
and the work carried out under the Inspector's supervision.
A report of each case containing full particulars required for the
Medical Officer of Health is prepared by the Inspector.
