HOUSE TO HOUSE INSPECTION.
Special attention has been devoted to this important branch
of Public Health service. The inspectorial staff have laboured
incessantly to overtake arrears occasioned by the war, and during
the year 4,393 primary visits were made, arising from which it
was discovered that at 3,678 houses, being 83 per cent., work of
sanitary amendment, comprising 17,252 defects, had to be dealt
with by the service of sanitary notices to render the dwellings in
such a condition which could be considered a reasonable state of
