During 1971, 33 persons proceeded to addresses in the Borough and
were notified as having come from areas where smallpox was endemic.
They were kept under surveillance as were the 240 travellers coming from
areas where cholera was endemic. The vast majority of the latter came
from Spain during the short period of September to November. This
placed a considerable additional burden upon the Public Health Inspectorate
and I am grateful to them for their willing co-operation in visiting
every one of these families within a few days of their arrival in this country.
