Population
The estimated mid-year population was 205,000 which was a decrease
of 560 as compared with the figure for 1970. The natural increase in
population—excess of births over deaths—was 832 and the number of
occupied houses and flats rose by 221 to 69,516.
Births
During the year 2,943 live births (1,516 male and 1,427 female) were
registered, giving a crude birth rate of 14.4 per 1,000 population. Correction
of this rate by the application of the Registrar General's area comparability
factor gives a birth rate of 14.7 as compared with the birth
rate of 16.0 per 1,000 population for England and Wales. 190 of the
live births were illegitimate giving a percentage of total births of 6.0.
