Population
The estimated mid-year population was 206,060 which was a decrease
of 1640 as compared with the figure for 1969. The natural increase in
population—excess of births over deaths—was 808 and the number of
occupied houses and flats rose by 279 to 68,725.
Births
During the year 2,931 live births (1,472 male and 1,459 female) were
registered, giving a crude birth rate of 14.2 per 1,000 population. Correction
of this rate by the application of the Registrar General's area comparability
factor gives a birth rate of 14.5 as compared with the birth
rate of 16.0 per 1,000 population for England and Wales. 148 of the
live births were illegitimate giving a percentage of total births of 5.0.
