Gentlemen,
The Annual Report of the Medical Officer of Health for the year
1917 is again in a very much abridged form.
The Birth Rate is 19.57 per 1,000 for Greenwich and 17.5 for the
whole of the County of London. The recorded Death Rate of 15.96
per 1,000 of the estimated population being slightly higher than 15.0
per 1,000, the Death Rate for the County of London and 14.6 per
1,000, the figure for the 96 large towns.
The Infantile Mortality Rate for the Borough, measured by the
number of deaths under one year to 1,000 births registered, is 105, an
increase from 83, the figure for last year; the figure for all London
is 103, compared with 89 in 1916, and the Borough average during the
last five years, 1912-16 inclusive, is 94.
The Zymotic Death Rate of 1.42 is 0.17 per 1,000 below the
corresponding figure for last year.

In conclusion, I have again to thank the Public Health Committee
and Council for the kindness and consideration with which they have
regarded my endeavours to carry out the duties of Medical Officer of
Health and Tuberculosis Officer, and I have also to express my
appreciation of the manner in which the members of the Staff have
performed their duties throughout the past year.
