REMARKS ON VARIOUS DEATH CAUSES.
Infective Diseases.
Epidemic. There were 139 deaths due to this class of diseases,
equalling a Death Rate of 1.54 per 1,000; the rate last year
was 1.71, and was 1.59, 2.30 and 1.71 in 1913, 1914 and 1915
respectively.
Zymotic. The purely Zymotic class of epidemic diseases
is credited with causing a total of 128 deaths, equalling a Death
Rate of 1.42 per 1,000.
Locally, the Zymotic Death Rate varied from .00 in Kidbrooke
(0.35 in 1916), 1.18 in Charlton (0.97 in 1916), 1.21 in
West Greenwich (2.18 in 1916), 1.31 in East Greenwich (1.12 in
1916), up to 3.80 in St. Nicholas (4.34 in 1916).
Small Pox. There were no deaths from this disease in 1917,
this being the fifteenth year since a death occurred from this
cause in the Borough.
Measles. Forty-five deaths were ascribed as due to this
disease, 42 of the patients being under five years of age, and 3
between five and fifteen years of age, compared with 48 which
occurred in 1916; 43, 46 and 48 deaths were recorded in the three
preceding years.
Twenty-one of the deaths occurred in East Greenwich, 8 in
West Greenwich, 10 in St. Nicholas, and 6 in Charlton. The
quarterly incidence was 18 in the first, and 20, 5 and 2 respectively
in the succeeding quarters.
Scarlet Fever. This disease occasioned one death, between
the ages of 25 and 45 years. The death occurred in East Greenwich.
Four such deaths occurred in 1916 and 4 in 1915.
Diphtheria. There were 27 deaths from this disease during
1917. This gives a Death Rate for Diphtheria of 0.29 comparing
with 0.23, the rate for 1916. Twenty-two deaths occurred in 1916
which were attributed to this cause, and 18, 16 and 14 in the three
preceding years.
Twelve of the patients were under five years of age, and 15
of the patients were over five years of age.
