The number of Marriages for the two previous years were
252 and 118 respectively.
The Metropolitan Marriage.rate for 1897 was 18*5, being the
highest recorded for any year since 1878.
Births.
The Births registered in the Parish during the year numbered
1,860, 935 being boys and 925 girls; of the total number 483
were born in the City of London Lying.in Hospital, but as only
47 of the mothers were permanent residents in the Parish of
St. Luke, a deduction of 436 has to be made from this number,
leaving 1,424 as the actual figures which represent the Births to
be credited to the Parish, and after allotting 47 to the several
districts of the Parish in which the parents resided, the Births
of the respective sub.districts were as follows : —
In the City Road Sub.Registration District there were 1,106 ;
in the Whitecross Street Sub.Registration District there were
239, and in the Finsbury Sub.Registration District there were
79. In relation to the estimated population the figures stand
as under :—
