Population
The estimated mid—year population was 207,700 which was a decrease
of 520 as compared with the figure for 1968. The natural increase in
population—excess of births over deaths—was 873 and the number of
occupied houses and flats rose by 279 to 68,725.
Births
During the year 3,031 live births (1,551 male and 1,480 female) were

rate of 16.3 per 1,000 population for England and Wales. 200 of the
live births were illegitimate giving a percentage of total births of 7.0.
