SHOPS
At the end of the year there were 2,171 occupied shops on the register,
5 fewer than at the end of the previous year. A number of shops which
became vacant were later re-occupied for business purposes (other than
retail trade) e.g. as offices or agencies.
Two new large food stores opened during the year, while one closed
down and at the end of the year was still vacant. The number of small
food businesses fell by 16.

During the year 1,269 visits were made for the purposes of administering
the Shops Acts 1950/1965; Sunday and evening observations were
also made, and many minor contraventions were noted and dealt with.
Summary proceedings were taken in one case where a trader persisted
in selling non-exempted goods on a Sunday; a fine of £2 was imposed.
