Section 28 — Prevention of Illness, Care and After Care
Chiropody
A chiropody service is provided by the Borough for the treatment of
expectant mothers, handicapped persons and the elderly. Valuable
assistance is also given in this service through arrangements made with
the British Red Cross who in addition to providing facilities at centres
also have a service for treating the home bound. The demand for chiropody
services is an ever increasing one and it is pleasing to note that by recruitment
it was possible to raise the nineteen sessions each week at the
beginning of the year to a total of thirty-six each week by the end of the
year.
Patients unable to travel by public transport can be collected by the
ambulance car service. Unfortunately, due to heavy demands on the
ambulance service, severe delays can occur in picking up patients again for
their return journey home. In order to try and overcome this problem, a
modified service was instituted using the Borough's own transport as and
when it could be spared from other health and welfare commitments.
