Section 28—Prevention of Illness, Care and After Care
Chiropody
A chiropody service is provided by the Borough for the treatment of
expectant mothers, handicapped persons and the elderly. The service is
limited, however, by the shortage of chiropodists. Valuable assistance is
given in this service through arrangements made with the British Red
Cross, who in addition to providing facilities at centres, also continue a
service for treating the home bound. Patients unable to travel by public
transport because of some medical reason are collected by the ambulance
car service—a supporting medical certificate is required in these cases.
Unfortunately, due to the heavy demands on the ambulance service, delays
do occur in picking up patients at the clinics for their return home. The
possibility of using the Borough's own transport for this type of case is
being investigated to try and obviate these difficulties. Nineteen sessions
at the clinics were maintained each week during the year. These sessions
were planned to try and give a service to most parts of the Borough.
