This shows the number of open fire appliances which were adapted
to enable solid smokeless fuel to be burned, added to the number of new
solid fuel appliances installed and in fact gives a more accurate picture
of the fuels being burned in all rooms where the appliance has been
the subject of some form of grant. It will be seen, however, that the
trends remain the same and that the majority of people making the
change from solid fuel as a means of room heating are choosing gas.
Conclusions
It would seem that the intensive propaganda over the past few years
raging the installation of more efficient heating appliances together
with the increased amount of money people are spending on improving
their homes is having its effect. This is indicated by the drop from 88%
in 1961 to 63% in 1964 in the number of rooms that are heated by
open fires.
