The hospital car service operated jointly by the British Red Cross
Society, the St. John's Ambulance Brigade and the Women's Voluntary
Services, provides cars and drivers who give their services voluntarily,
and by arrangement with the County Council takes many patients to and
from hospitals and clinics.
One of the rules on the use of local ambulances issued by the Ministry
of Health reads: "The obligation which rests on the Ambulance Service
is not to make arrangements for the conveyance of all persons suffering
from illness but only of those for whom special transport such as the
Service provides, is necessary. This applies just as much to transport
for sitting cases such as by means of cars in the hospital car service, as
to transport of stretcher cases".
