REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER
OF HEALTH.
To the Chairman and Members of the Urban District Council
of Harrow.
Mr. Chairman, Mrs. Leech and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit the Annual Report on the Health and Sanitary
Circumstances of the District for the year 1938.
The Report this year is somewhat curtailed as it is felt that
any value such a volume possesses steadily diminishes with the
lapse of time from the period covered.
The vital statistics again are satisfactory. The maternal
mortality rate is lower than in previous years, though again is
above the rate recorded for the rest of the country. The infant
mortality rate, while well below the national rate, is an appreciable
rise on the exceedingly low figure recorded in 1937.
The clinic services were again extended to cope with the
increasing population, though the rate of this increase might be
expected to be slower in future as the houses erected during the
year were only 2,890 as compared with figures of 4,331, 4,715,
4,173 and 4,222 for the years 1934 to 1937.
I have the honour to be,
Mrs. Leech and Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
CARYL THOMAS,
Medical Officer of Health.
Council Offices,
Harrow-on-the-Hill.
July 1st, 1939.
