Incidence. DIPHTHERIA.
79 notifications of diphtheria were received during the year,
the diagnosis, however, being revised in 16 instances, most commonly
to acute tonsillitis. 63 cases in a population of 183,500 is a rate
per 1,000 of 0-34, as compared with that of 1-58 for the country
as a whole. This is the ninth consecutive year in which a low
incidence has prevailed.
Secondary infections occurred in five households, on one
occasion there being two secondary cases apparently due to an
infective ear discharge.
