Of the 1,601 sheep slaughtered only 32 were found unsound
in any respect. The commonest abnormal states were parasitic
diseases affecting the liver of 29 and the lungs of 8.
Only 2 of the 314 calves were unsound, the entire carcase of
one being condemned on account of immaturity, the lungs of
another being affected with abscesses.

The following table gives particulars of the numbers of animals slaughtered and the incidence of disease:—

Bakehouses.
There are 6 factory and 41 retail bakehouses in the district,
to which 125 visits were paid during the year.
In some instances it was found the premises needed cleansing
which was carried out on receipt of notice from this Department.
Food Shops.
688 visits were paid to butchers' shops, 198 to fish shops, 342
to provision shops, 199 to dairies and milk shops and 303 to greengrocers'
shops. The following amounts of foodstuffs were
condemned and voluntarily surrendered:—Fish, 81 stones; corned
beef, 8 lbs.; meat-pies, 403; chickens, 53 lbs.; fresh fruit of various
descriptions, 28 lbs.; and dried fruit f lb.
