belt where it is sorted by hand and iron waste removed by a magnetic
selector. The tailings are discharged on the floor near the destructor
furnace which is hand fed. 5,266 tons a year, or 99 tons a week,
were disposed of at a cost of 6s. 2d. a ton. The refuse from the
Hendon Rural District is disposed of by controlled tipping at a
shoot in Pinner.
Cesspool Emptying.
In Wealdstone there is one cesspool and three in the Hendon
Rural District. All are emptied by the owners.
Disinfection.
In the former Hendon Rural District, on the occurrence of a
case of infectious disease, infected rooms were fumigated with
formalin, and bedding, etc. removed to the Isolation Hospital for
steam disinfection. In the Wealdstone district, infected premises
were disinfected by formalin gas and sprayed, the work being
similarly undertaken in premises occupied by patients suffering
from cancer or tuberculosis. No charge was made for the work
which was carried out by the Sanitary Inspectors. In the former
Harrow-on-the-Hill district, disinfection of infected premises was
carried out by the Fever Hospital staff at the time they called to
remove the bedding, etc., to the hospital for steam disinfection.
Fumigation was also carried out by members of the Hospital staff
of premises infested with bugs or other vermin, and bedding and
clothing were removed for stoving after scabies. Premises and
bedding were also disinfected on the occurrence of non-notifiable
disease, a charge being made for the latter class of work.
In November, 1934, it was agreed that fumigation and stoving
be carried out free of charge at premises infected with a notifiable
disease; in other cases fumigation only to be undertaken when
demanded, an appropriate charge being made in each case. These
charges were later fixed at 7s. 6d. per room fumigated and for
stoving 10s. for the first and 5s. for each subsequent load.
MORTUARIES.
The following is a copy of the report submitted on the
mortuaries in the district:—
"There are three mortuaries in this district, situated at Paines
Lane, Pinner, at Pinner Road, Harrow, and at Peel Road, Wealdstone.
"The Pinner Mortuary is a brick structure with tiled roof
16 feet by 12 feet. It has a concrete floor, centrally drained to a
cesspool. The lower parts of the walls are tiled and the upper
parts are painted. There is a cold water supply to a sink and a
separate sink without a tap which drains to a cesspool. Hot water
is available by baling from a coke heated copper which is not
drained. Natural lighting is poor, and the building is artificially
