The subjoined figures illustrate the development of the Parish, in population and wealth, since the beginning of the century:—
The Year. | Population. | Rateable value of Property. | The Year, |
---|---|---|---|
i1801 | 8,556 | £75.916 | 1823 |
1821 | 14,428 | 93,397 | 1833 |
1841 | 26,834 | 142,772 | 1843 |
[851 | 44,053 | 257,103 | 1853 |
l86l | 70,108 | 444,030 | 1863 |
1871 | 120,299 | 975,046 | 1873 |
1881 | 163,151 | 1,711,495 | 1883 |
1891 1892 | 166,308 166,700 | 2,037,221 (April) | 1893 |
It thus appears that the population at the commencement
of the last decade of the century was nearly twenty times as
great as in the first year of the century; and that the rateable
value of property has undergone in 70 years an immense
increase, being nearly 27 times as great in 1893 as it was in
1823, the first year in respect of which I possess information.
Kensington is still in process of development by building,
but at a moderate rate compared with past years—1861-70, for instance.
The following Table, brought up to date, exhibits the growth of the Parish since the Metropolis Local Management Act came into operation, in 1856:—
1856. | 1892. | Increase in 36 years. | |
---|---|---|---|
Number of Inhabited Houses | 7,600 | 22,050 | 14,450 |
Population | 57,000 | 166,700 | 109,700 |
Rateable Value of Property | £308,000 | £2,025,409 | £1,717,409 |
The increase in all respects within the last twenty-one
years, the period over which my official experience extends,
is not inconsiderable, as the subjoined figures shew:—
