observed in Hammersmith, the deaths being 22, those in the
contiguous parish of Fulham being 10. The above figures,
taken from the Quarterly Returns of the Registrar-General, do
not correctly represent the actual deaths belonging to the
several parishes. Deaths are registered in the districts where
they occur, and 20 deaths of persons removed to hospitals were
registered in the sub-districts in which the hospitals are situated,
without reference to the localities from which the patients came.
The deaths registered in Kensington from diphtheria were, as
above stated, 65 (one only in the Brompton sub-district), but
the actual deaths of Kensington parishioners, including those
which occurred in hospitals were 89 ; two only in Brompton.
The quarterly totals were 7, 10, 30, and 42 respectively. The
ages at death were :—Under 5 years, 56, including 4 under one
year ; between 5 and 15, there were 29 deaths , between 25 and
35, there were 2 deaths, and there were 2 between 3 5 and 45.
The cases of illness recorded were 144, but taking the
mortality at the high rate of 50 per cent., at least 180 cases must
have occurred. Of the recorded cases, 129 were in North
Kensington, i.e., north ofUxbridge Road ,and 15 in South Kensington,
i.e., the remainder of tha parish south of Uxbridge
Road. Of the 129 cases in North Kensington, 7 occurred
between January and May. The other 122 cases, constituting
the "endemic," to which my further remarks will be restricted,
originated between June and December, viz., in June 5, in July
6, in August 15, in September 21, in October 37, in November
23, and in December 15. These 122 cases occurred in 91
families, living in 84 houses, and in 43 streets. Sixteen of the
streets are in the North-west District, i.e., to the west of
Ladbruke Grove and Ladbroke Grove Road, and 27 in the
North-east District, between those roads and the adjacent
parish of Paddington and the detached Kensal Green portion
of Chelsea at Kensal Green. In 28 of the 43 streets one house
in each street was invaded , in 8 streets two houses were
invaded; in 2 streets, three houses ; in 1 street, four houses ;
