Where these patients (other than Kensington cases) came from
does not appear, the Board having at that time ceased to publish
returns of admissions at their hospitals from single parishes and
unions. By 29th November the cases in the hospitals had risen
to 884. In four weeks ended 21st November, 27 cases were
admitted at the Western Hospital, and on 21st 17 patients were
remaining under treatment. The recorded cases in this parish in
the four weeks ended November 29, were 20, including 9 in the
southern division. In the next five weeks (November 30th—
January 3rd, 1885), completing the registration year 1884, there
was a considerable increase in the local cases, 37 having
been recorded, 5 in North, and 32 in South Kensington. Twelve
deaths were registered in the same period. On January 3rd there
were 1,013 patients in the hospitals; only ten of them in the
Western Hospital, into which, however, forty cases had been
admitted in the four weeks ended January 2nd, and from which
27 cases were transferred to the Hospital Ships and the Camp.
In evidence of the malignant character of the disease at this time
(when, however, none but "severe" cases were admitted), it may
be mentioned that 22 patients died at the Western Hospital
within the four weeks.
I subjoin a statement of the number of cases invaded in each of the four weekly periods in 1885, covered by my monthly reports, together with statistics shewing the progress of the epidemic in the Metropolis as a whole.
