South Kensington respectively. On June 20th the patients in
hospitals were only 1,119, a decrease in four weeks of 255.
Mean temperature or 2°.9 above the average.
In the seventh period (25th.28th weeks, June 21st to July
18th) the death rate fell to 14'9, was 0.4 below the average, and
8.2 below the Metropolitan rate, this being 1.7 below the average.
The deaths from the principal zymotic diseases were 50 (12 above
the average), including small.pox 2, measles 21, whooping cough
12, and enteric fever 1. The deaths from diarrhoea, 1 and 5
in the two previous months, rose to 14; all of the deaths were
of children under five. At this period some anxiety was felt
with regard to the probability of an invasion of cholera, the
disease having broken out in Spain. The reported cases of
small.pox were 11; 6 and 5 in North and South Kensington
respectively. The cases in hospitals had further declined, by
July 18th, to 775. Mean temperature was average 61°.2.
In the eighth period (29th.82nd weeks, July 19th to August
15th) the death rate rose to 18.7, and was 1.9 above the average.

the average. The deaths from the principal diseases of the
zymotic class were 59—the highest number recorded in 1885—
and were three above the average, viz., small.pox '2, measles 7,
scarlet fever 3, diphtheria 4, whooping cough 7, and diarrhoea 36.
Diarrhoea was at its maximum at this period; the mortality,
however, was still wholly confined to infants. Anxiety on the
subject of cholera increased by reason of the extension of the
scourge from Spain (where the mortality had been great) to
France. The reported cases of small.pox were 16—an increase
of 5 ; 9 and 7 in North and South Kensington respectively;
but the epidemic was rapidly declining in the metropolis, the
cases in the hospitals, on August 15th, having fallen to 399.
Mean temperature 62°.2, or 0°.2 above the average.
In the ninth period (33rd.36th weeks, August 16th to
September 12th) the death rate fell to 13.6, or 0.9 below the
average : it was 3.6 below the Metropolitan rate, which was 2.7
