it was 2.5 below the Metropolitan rate, which was 0.6 below the.
average. The high rate was clue to an excessive mortality among
aged persons, 112 having died at 60 and upwards, compared
with 65 in the last month of 1884. The deaths from chest
diseases were 32 more than in that month. The deaths from
the principal diseases of the zymotic class, including one from
small.pox and 10 from whooping cough, were 17, or 12 below
the corrected decennial average. Small.pox at this time was
still prevalent in London : the cases in hospital on January 31st
were 1,147 ; 253 patients having been admitted in the last week
of the month, in which week the deaths from this cause were 59.
In this Parish the reported cases during the four weeks were 24;
five in North and 19 in South Kensington—the Parliamentary.
Divisions so named, the boundary following the course of the
Uxbridge Road. The mean temperature of the air was 37.1
Fahr., or 1o.l below the means in the corresponding weeks in the
previous ten years.
In the second period of four weeks (5th.8th weeks, February
lst.28th), the death rate fell to 14.4; was 5.5 below the
average, and 5.3 below the Metropolitan rate, this being 5'7
below the average. The fall in the rate was explained by the
large diminution in deaths of aged persons at sixty, and upwards ;
52 only, compared with 112 in the previous month. Chest
diseases were the causes of 57 deaths only, as against 95. The
deaths from the principal diseases of the zymotic class were 12
(whooping cough 7), the lowest number recorded in 1885, and 15
below the average. The reported cases of small.pox were 17;
8 and 9 in North and South Kensington respectively. Mean
temperature 43°.9, or 3°.5 below the average.
In the third period (9th.12th weeks, March lst.28th) the
death rate rose to 16'5, but was 2.7 below the average : and
4.5 below the Metropolitan rate, which was 2'7 below the average.
The deaths from the principal zymotic diseases were 21 (4 below
the average), including 2 from small.pox, 5 from measles, and
11 from whooping cough. The reported cases of small.pox
were 15; 7 and 8 in North and South Kensington respectively.
