THIRTIETH ANNUAL REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
BEING FOR THE YEAR 1885.
To the Vestry of the Parish of St. Mary Abbotts, Kensington.
Gentlemen,
In the following report the vital statistics are for the
registration year ended January 2nd, 1886, and the sanitary
statistics for the parochial year ended March 25th, 1886.
The vital statistics are calculated upon an estimated population
of 172,000, a total arrived at on data furnished by the census of
1881, corrected by the known number of inhabited houses at the
middle of 1885.
The year was, on the whole, a healthy year; the deaths, 2,768,
being 286 below the decennial average, corrected for increase of
population. The deaths, however, show a (corrected) increase of
100 upon the number registered in 1884, an increase due in large
measure to the excessive fatality of measles.
The death.rate, 16.1 per 1,000, was 1.0 above the rate in 1884,
which was the lowest on record, but it was 1.5 below the decennial
average. It was 3.6 below the rate in London as a whole (19.7),
and 2'9 below the rate in England and Wales (19'0).
But while the death rate in Kensington shows an increase of
10 per 1,000, as compared with 1884, the death rate in London
shows a decrease of 0.6, it having been the lowest on record. The
