This mortality is equal to only 2.18 per 1000 of the population,
the lowest on record. In 1872 the rate was 3, and in 1871, 4.5
per 1000. One hundred and forty-five of these deaths were due to
Diarrhoea, and the remaining 155, little more than 1 per 1000
living, to the other six diseases.

The deaths occurred in the Sub-districts as follows:—

Pulmonary diseases, excluding Phthisis, caused 483 deaths,
equivalent to 200 per 1000 of the total deaths, and to 3.6 per
1000 of the population.
The Tubercular diseases, including Phthisis, Scrofula, Rickets,
and Tabes Mesenterica were fatal in 332 instances = 137 per 1000
deaths and 2.4 per 1000 living.
The Wasting diseases of Infants (including Marasmus, Atrophy,
Debility, want of breast milk, and Premature birth, as registered
causes of death,) account for 186 deaths = 76 per 1000 deaths
and 1.4 per 1000 living. The Convulsive diseases of infants (e. g.
Hydrocephalus, Infantile Meningitis, Convulsions, and Teething,)
caused 166 deaths = 71 per 1000 deaths and 1.2 per 1000 of the
population. "Constitutional" diseases caused 468 deaths = 192
per 1000 deaths and 3 5 per 1000 living: and Developmental
diseases, 306 deaths = 126 per! 000 deaths and 2.3 per 1000
living. The violent deaths were 59 in number = 24 per 1000
deaths and 0.4 per 1000 living, while the deaths, the causes of
which were not specified or were ill-defined, were 34 = 15
per 1000 deaths and 0.2 per 1000 of the population.

in the Appendix.
EPIDEMIC OF MEASLES.
Towards the close of the year an epidemic of Measles commenced,
and both during the months of November and December,
and also during the first half of the current year proved remarkably
fatal. The deaths during the year were 38, of which 29
occurred in the last two months. This rate of mortality was
greatly exceeded in the current year, when in the first three
