Ambulance Service for Maternity Cases.
In July, 1937,1 submitted the following report to the Maternity
and Child Welfare Committee:—
At the last meeting of the Maternity and Child Welfare
Committee I reported the case of a Leyton mother whose
baby was born in a taxicab while the mother was being conveyed
to The Mothers' Hospital, Clapton, for her confinement.
In accordance with the instruction contained in the above
Council Minute I have discussed the matter fully with your
Fire Brigade Superintendent and submit the following observations
and suggestions.
Of 1,421 Leyton mothers who gave birth to children
during last year (1936), some 760 (i.e., 53 per cent.), had their
confinements in the following maternity homes or hospitals
outside the district:—
