Finaen Light Treatment.—This form of treament is available for patients
suffering from lupus and is carried out at the London Hospital under an arrangement
made in 1921. A fee of 5s. Od. is paid for Finsen Light Treatment. For other
forms of light treatment the fee is Is. Od. Two patients were so treated during
the year.
Artificial Pneumothorax.—This treatment is at present the most satisfactory
form of putting a diseased lung at rest. Air is introduced through a needle into
the pleural cavity of the affected side or sides and as it becomes absorbed it is replaced
at varying intervals. These refills have to be maintained over a lengthy period—
two or three years. The Council pays a fee of 10s. 6d. for every refill. This charge
includes the necessary X-ray work in connection therewith. At the present time
refills are carried out at various hospitals, both voluntary and public. Sometimes
the patient continues to attend a sanatorium as an out-patient.
The growth of this method of treatment in recent years is shown by the following

Occasionally patients undergoing this treatment are also recommended for
a simultaneous course of Sanocrysin. The cost to the Council for each injection
given to patients recommended for it by the Tuberculosis Officer is 3s. 6d. No
such injections were given during the year.
