Complaints.—During the year, 3,472 complaints of nuisances were made to
the Health Department or to the Sanitary Inspectors on the district, and all these
were investigated by the Sanitary Inspectors. Notices for the remedy or abatement
of the defects or nuisances discovered were served upon the owner or other person
responsible under the provisions of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891, or the
appropriate Sections of the London County Council (General Powers) Acts, or under
By-laws.
Sanitary Inspection of the Area.—A summary of the inspections carried
out by the sanitary inspectors wll be found in Table No. 17. In connection therewith
the number of intimation and statutory notices served was 2,459 and 539
respectively. The statutory notices related to 435 premises and included 416 general,
27 ashpit, 19 water-closet and 34 paving notices. In addition to these notices under
the Public Health (London) Act, 1891, 42 notices were served under London County
Council (General Powers) Acts and under By-laws, and one under the Rats and Mice
(Destruction) Act, 1919.
In 92 instances, where owners did not comply with the statutory notices, the
Town Clerk was asked to institute proceedings. It was only necessary, however,
to issue summonses in three instances, as in all the other cases the necessary steps
were taken on receipt of a letter from him. Two of the summonses were not heard
until January, 1936.
In Table No. 18 will be found a summary of the nuisances abated and defects
remedied.
