Out Patient Hospital Treatment. Arrangements exist with different London
Hospitals for special forms of treatment. During the year 29 Finsen Light treatments
and 126 Ultra Violet Ray treatments were given, and 146 Pseudo-thorax
Refills were carried out. All the X-Ray examinations were carried out at the War
Memorial Hospital.
Denial Treatment. Dental treatment is carried out under the Council's scheme
at the School Clinic, Brewer Street. During the year 25 cases received treatment,
the number of attendances being 56. The only charge made to patients is in connection
with the supply of dentures, and then patients are assessed according to
their means. Dentures were supplied in 14 cases at a cost of £60 18s. 6d., and
payments by patients amounted to £24 Is. 9d. In assessing patients, due regard
is given to dental' benefits they may be entitled to from approved societies.
Shelters. Twelve shelters are maintained by the Council for patients returning
from sanatoria who are able and willing to continue this form of treatment.
Sputum Examinations. During the year 677 specimens of sputum were
examined at the Dispensary. Of these 114 were positive and 563 negative. Facilities
for general practitioners are provided at the Woolwich War Memorial Hospital
and 347 specimens were examined during the year, 48 being positive and 299 negative.
Extra Nourishment. Extra nourishment, in the form of butter, eggs and milk,
is supplied to tuberculous patients on the certificate of the Tuberculosis Officer.
The object of this measure is to help the ex-sanatorium patient and other suitable
cases by the provision of such extra nourishment as will make the difference between
progress and relapse. It is not intended for advanced cases of tuberculosis where
real improvement cannot be expected. The expenditure on this service is limited
to £2 per 1,000 population.
Nursing. During the year arrangements were made with the local Nursing
Associations for the nursing of cases of tuberculosis, this disease being added to the
list of those already approved under other aspects of the Council's work. Payment
is made at the rate of Is. 3d. per approved visit, but the London County Council
limited the amount ranking for grant for the year 1930-31 to £50.
Institutional Treatment. The following Table shews the number of admissions
to special hospitals, sanatoria, public general hospitals, institutions and training
colonies :—
