Cemeteries.—There are two cemeteries in the Borough, known as the Woolwich
Cemetery and the Plumstead Cemetery, the Woolwich one being divided into two
parts, the old and the new. Both are owned by the Council, and both are in the
Parish of Plumstead. There is also a Churchyard at Eltham. The Plumstead
Churchyard was closed in 1930. For some years now the Council have been
endeavouring to acquire ground to form a cemetery at Eltham, but so far have
been unsuccessful, all the sites which were examined being turned down on
sanitary or other grounds. At the end of the year, however, it seemed likely that
a site would shortly be obtained suitable for the purpose.
In Table No. 30, which follows, is shown the number of interments in the
different graveyards. The information regarding the Cemeteries is given through
the courtesy of the Town Clerk, and, in the case of Eltham Churchyard, through
that of the Vicar of Eltham.
