The ages of walking, talking, cleanliness as regards habits, hours of sleep, digestion
and appetite were recorded. The child was then seen standing undressed, and a
note made of general physical development and of any deformities present. Heart,
lungs, mouth, teeth, throat, and ears were then examined in turn, and an attempt
was made to engage the child in conversation so as to obtain some idea of its intelligence
and speech development, reaction to strangers, obedience to mother, etc.
The diet was then enquired into in detail, and advice given on this and on general
matters of management. If time allowed, the child was seen walking and its shoes
were examined for proper fit and shape.
Following the examination, children with certain abnormalities were referred
for observation and others for treatment. The health visitor advised the mother
regarding clothing during the dressing and undressing of the child, and, when
necessary, she visited the home.
In Table No. 78 are shewn the results of the examination.
