Welfare Centres. In Woolwich all the centres with one
exception are municipal, and two changes took place during
the year. These changes were not additions but consequent
upon change of premises, the centres at the Town Hall and
Beresford Street being transferred to the Old Town Hall and
the Holy Trinity Church Halls respectively. At the end of
the year 4 ante-natal clinics, and 17 infant welfare sessions
were being held each week.
Old Town Hall Centre and Artificial Sunlight Clinic. It
had been felt for some time that the Town Hall Centre, consisting
of rooms in the basement of the Town Hall buildings,
had become too small and inconvenient for the work which
was being done there, and that the time had arrived when an
artificial sunlight clinic should be established in Woolwich.
Suitable accommodation for these purposes was found on
the ground floor of the Old Town Hall. The work of reconstruction
was commenced in the Spring and carried out by
direct labour under the Borough Engineer. In the plan of
the building, which appears on page 129, all the rooms are
fully described and further explanation is unnecessary here.
The doctor's room is the centre of the organisation and is
used for the sunlight consultations as well. The opening of
this new centre and sunlight clinic formed a very appropriate
inauguration of Health Week. It was opened by His Worship
the Mayor and was available for inspection by the general
public during the week. It began to function as a centre
on the 3rd October, and as a sunlight clinic on the 7th October.
The Work of the Centres. Tables Nos. 69 and 70, which
follow, give detailed statistics for the year 1927 and the
consolidated statistics for the year 1926. The attendances
at the centres, although up to the average of previous years,
were slightly lower than in 1926.
