PREFACE.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich .
Mr Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit the Twenty-fifth Annual Report
on the health of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich.
This report differs from its predecessors in that it is a survey
report in contradistinction to the ordinary reports of previous
years. A survey report is expected to deal with measures
of progress made in the area during the preceding five years
in the improvement of the public health and with the extent
and character of the changes in the services which have taken
place in that period. Accordingly, in writing this report, a
review has been given of the Council's health activities and
special reference has been made in the appropriate sections
to the changes which have taken place during the quinquennium
in addition to the ordinary matters dealt with
each year.
Progress has been made in many directions during the
past five years in improving the conditions under which
people live, and the changes which have taken place have all
contributed to the health, care and comfort of the people.
Woolwich maintains its foremost position amongst the
sanitary districts of London.
The work of the various services of this department are
referred to in detail in the pages of the report, and it is only
necessary here to refer to a few aspects of the work.
