vital statistics section of the report are studied it will be
noticed that, speaking in broad numbers, less than per cent.
of all children born in the Borough have now the prospect of
not attaining the age of five years, whereas a decade ago, 12½
per cent. died before reaching that age. In that period the
infant mortality rate has diminished from 86 to 57.
The first Health Exhibition organised by the Council, on its
own health activities and those of the voluntary organisations
working in the Borough, was held during the year. Judged
by the number of attendances, it was greatly appreciated by
the inhabitants of the Borough, and, demonstrating as it did
in a simple way the various activities, must have been of great
educational value to many. The organisation of such an
exhibition means the expenditure of a large amount of time
and energy and cannot be successfully accomplished without
the active co-operation of the various organisations and individuals
in the Borough, and we are indebted to all who
helped to make it such a success.
In conclusion, I take this opportunity of saying how much
pleasure it gives me to express my appreciation of the keen,
conscientious and able manner in which the staff of the Health
Department have carried out their work. I have again to
record my acknowledgements for the kindness and consideration
which I have received from members of the Council
and particularly from the members of the two Health Committees,
to all of whom I accord my thanks.
