first year of life is included in the Maternity and Child Welfare
section of the report.
The reports of the Sanitary Inspectors shew that a considerable
amount of work has been carried out in the improvement
of the sanitary condition of houses, but improvement
in existing houses cannot be satisfactorily maintained
until more are built. Details of the work of supervision of
the food supplies, a matter of great importance, are given
in that section of the report dealing with Sanitary Administration.
The staff have carried out their duties during the year
in a thorough and conscientious manner and personally I
owe much to them for the zeal they have shewn in their
work.
I take this opportunity of expressing my thanks to the
Members of the Council, especially to those serving on the
Public Health and Housing, and Maternity and Child Welfare
Committees, for the support and sympathetic consideration
they have given to the work of the Department during the
year.
