Twenty-First Annual Report
ON THE
HEALTH OF THE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH
OF WOOLWICH.
Year ending 31st December 1921.
NATURAL AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF THE
DISTRICT.
POPULATION.
Census.—The population of Woolwich on the 19/20th
June, 1921, consisted of 140,403 persons, of whom 69,GOG
were males and 70,737 were females. The nett civilian figure,
however, was 136,307. In 1911, the population of Woolwich
was 121,376, so that there is a nett increase of 19,027 persons,
the ratio between 1911 and 1921 being as 100 to 116. This
is the largest relative and actual increase in any Metropolitan
Borough.
The density of population per acre was 17, but although
this figure is the lowest in London, it loses value from the
fact that over one-third of the Borough is not built on. The
density figure per room is much more important, and here we
find that the figure for Woolwich is 1.01, being the tenth
lowest in London. The average number of persons per house
was 5.28 as compared with a general London average of 6.06.
The Census was taken in June instead of at the usual period
