8. Illegitimate Births. 81 of the births registered were
illegitimate, giving a rate of 29 per 1,000 births, compared
with 19, 13, 17, 23 and 21 in the five preceding years.
Although this is a marked increase, it is less than many
expected and smaller than the rate in London in peace time.
9. There were 1,829 marriages. The marriage-rate was
27.1, compared with 16.0, 16.4 and 17.7 in the three preceding
years. This is the highest marriage-rate recorded since the
Borough was constituted. The chief increase was in Plum.
stead. The marriage-rate in England and Wales was 19.2.
10. Table I. gives the gross and net deaths and death.
rates in 1915, and each of the past eleven years, and shows
how the net deaths are arrived at.
11. The net deaths were 1,841, and the net death-rate
13.7, compared with 12.3 and 13.2 in the two preceding years
and 12.5, the average of the ten preceding years ; 13.7 is the
highest rate recorded since 1904.
