It will be seen that the health of this area compares very
badly with that of the Borough.
The birth-ratei is but very slightly in excess of the deathrate.
Both the death-rate and the infantile death-rate are more
than twice as high as that of the Borough.
The zymotic death-rate is six times as high;
Tuberculosis death-rate more than twice as high;
Death-rate from alcoholism twenty times as high.
Ten years ago I calculated the death-rate of Stanley,
Sidney, Albert, and Fore Houses, for 1900-1-2, and found
it to be 20-8. There appears, then, to have been rather a
deterioration than an improvement in the health of the area.
The area is inhabited by a poor class of persons, and'
although it does not contain a public house there are two
public houses immediately adjoining, and two others within
one minute's walk, and it is obvious that too frequent resort
to these houses by the women as well as the men is one
cause of the unhealthy conditions.
