Underground rooms.
36. Fourteen underground rooms, separately occupied,
were found not in accordance with the Public Health
(London) Act. Five were in St. Mary's and Dockyard
Wards, four in River, three in Burrage, and two in St.
Nicholas Wards. The service of notices led to cessation
of occupation.
Factories, Workshops, and Workplaces.
37. There were, at the close of the year, 199 (203 in
1910) workshops and workplaces on the register. 890 inspections
were made, and 84 notices served and complied
with. 80 inspections of factories were made regarding
sanitary accommodation, and 5 notices served and complied
with. 405 inspections of homeworkers' premises were made
and 24 notices sent and attended to.
Miss Middlebrook devoted a large amount of her time
to the inspection of workshops, factories, and houses, where
women are employed; 41 new workrooms were measured up
and put on the register.
38. A special report on Home-work was presented to your
Council on October 31st, 1906, and printed in the Annual
Report of that year.
Bakehouses.
39. The number of factory bakehouses is 10, and of
workshop bakehouses in use is 43, 15 of the latter being
underground. 2 bakehouses (1 underground) were discontinued.
