PREFACE.
To the Mayor, Aldermen, and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Woohcich.
Mr. Mayok and Gentlemen,
I herewith present my eleventh Annual Report on the Health
of the Borough, including the twentieth Annual Report on the
health of Plumstead.
Owing to a summer whose heat established a record, there was
a higher mortality last year among infants than for several years
past. Tables VI., VIa, and VII. shew, however, that Woolwich
occupied a satisfactory position as compared with other London
Boroughs ; four other Boroughs had a lower death-rate, but only
one other had a lower infantile death-rate.
The work of dealing with the epidemic of Diarrhoea in the
summer overtaxed the powers of the two Women Inspectors and
emphasised the need of additional health visitors. One of the
two Women Inspectors usually devotes most of her time to health
visiting re infants, but this had to be neglected for several weeks
in August and September. The other Woman Inspector is now
occupied mainly in dealing with verminous houses and children
(see her report, par. 49), and can find no time for inspecting
houses let in lodgings, and very little for visiting houses were
infectious disease has occurred.
