76. Bacteriological Diagnosis. Sputum from 191 cases
of suspected Phthisis was examined at the Lister Institute,
and tubercle bacilli were found in 53 cases. The number
of examinations for the five preceding years was 130, 171,
175, 179, and 210, respectively. In addition, Dr. Short
examined a large number of cases at the Tuberculosis
Dispensary.
77. In my Annual Report for 1904 some figures were
given as to the "Public House as a source of Infection,"
and " Chronic Tuberculosis in Children" (see page 50 of
the Report).
78. Disinfection was performed by the Public Health
Department at 152 premises, compared with 157, 146, and
166, in the three preceding years. Of these 66 were disinfected
after the death of the patient, and 86 after removal
to hospital, sanatorium, or other opportunity.
79. Hospital and Sanatorium Treatment. The following
table, prepared by the directions of the Local Government
Board, shows the provision made for sanatorium and
hospital treatment of cases of consumption in the Borough
of Woolwich:—
