77. Bacteriological Diagnosis. Sputum from 210 cases of
suspected Phthisis was examined at the Lister Institute, and
tubercle bacilli were found in 64 cases. The number of
examinations for the five previous years was 130, 130, 171,
175, and 179, respectively. It appears that medical practitioners
are availing themselves to a greater extent of this
valuable means of diagnosis.
78. In my Annual Report for 1904 some figures were
given as to the "Public House as a source of Infection," and
"Chronic Tuberculosis in Children" (see page 50 of that
Report).
79. Disinfection was performed by the Public Health
Department at 166 premises, compared with 165, 157, and
146, in the three preceding years. Of these 77 were disinfected
after the death of the patient, and 89 after removal
to hospital, sanatorium, or other opportunity.
