The following resolutions were moved by your Medical
Officer of Health and seconded by Colonel Leslie:—
(a) That further provision for sanatorium treatment of
poor patients suffering from Phthisis is required in
London, for educational and curative purposes, and
also for isolation of advanced cases.
(b) That the education and cure of persons suffering
from Phthisis may be best and most economically
secured by each Metropolitan Borough maintaining,
at some existing sanatorium, a certain number
of beds according to their requirements.
(c) That the Metropolitan Asylums Board should make
provision for the isolation of advanced cases of
consumption, and that such Board be asked to
again approach the Local Government Board to
this end, and to take such further steps as may
be necessary.
In speaking on this motion I pointed out the great
benefits Woolwich had derived from sanatorium treatment at
Peppard, and the importance of provision by the Metropolitan
Asylums Board for advanced cases of consumption.
Such Board, however, is not one to which, in my opinion,
should be entrusted the provision of additional buildings
suitable for educational treatment, and treatment of early and
curable cases of consumption. If the Metropolitan Asylums
Board undertakes this latter work it will be done at much
greater expense, and not so well as if it were done at small
existing sanatoria.
It is, however, satisfactory that London is being roused
to the importance of sanatorium provision, and, even if the
Metropolitan Asylums Board again decide to take no action
