there has been a great and progressive decrease in each parish,
but greater in Plumstead than in Woolwich. In Eltham, after
a decrease in the second quinquennium, there was a marked
increase in the third, but the rate has now fallen below the
level of 1896-1900.

West Plumstead and E l thamhad the lowest birth-rate of the four registration districts.

8. Illegitimate Births. 72 of the births registered were
illegitimate, giving a rate of 24 per 1,000 births, compared
with 17, 17, 22, 24, and 20, in the five preceding years. The
illegitimate birth-rate in England and Wales was 39.9 in 1908.
marriages.
9. There were 847 marriages. The marriage rate was 13.2,
compared with 16.4, 14.6, and 13.7 in the three preceding
years. The great fall in the marriage rate, which was an
indication of the prevalent local industrial depression, shows
signs of arrest. In 1908, the marriage rate in London was
15.9, and in England and Wales 14.9. It will be seen that a
large part of the fall in the birth rate is accounted for by
reduction in the number of marriages.
